Judith Ann Atkinson Mawhinney (Judy), 87, passed away on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
Born in East Brady, Pennsylvania, to George and Dorothy Atkinson, she is survived by her brothers, Thomas Atkinson and James Atkinson and her daughters, Megan Stephan, Jacque Zoerner and Leslie Wallis, her beloved niece and nephew - in - law Shannon Atkinson- Ganoe and Gary Ganoe, daughter-in-law Lorilee Mawhinney along with many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind eight cherished grandchildren and six great grandchildren who delighted her soul. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert Andrew Mawhinney, her brother Ray Atkinson and her ex husband, Robert Earl Mawhinney.
Judy was raised in West Deer Township and graduated from West Deer High School. Having started nursing school in the late 1950’s, she started her family and was able to finish her BSN in nursing in the mid 1970’s. She worked as a psychiatric nurse and retired from nursing as a correctional nurse. After her retirement, Judy continued her life’s work in the health care field and obtained a PhD in Natural Medicine.
Judy’s love and legacy was her family and the circle of long time friends who turned to her for her wisdom and advice. In true nurse fashion, she would help anyone who needed a listening ear with grace and compassion. She will be sorely missed.
Judy will be buried at St. Paul’s Community Church in Chicora, PA. A Memorial Service will be held Saturday March 21, 2026 at 1pm at St. Paul's Community Church
In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request that a donation be made to the American Nurses Foundation / ANA as a memorial, or to the ACLU.
