James Joseph Sobien

James (Jim) Joseph Sobien,

age 76, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, passed away on June 21, 2026.

Born on November 29, 1949, and raised in the City of Pittsburgh, James lived a life devoted to faith, family, service, and generosity. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, pastor, and friend whose impact will be felt for generations to come.

James was the love of his wife, Sandra Sobien's (Haffly), life. Together, they built a family centered on love, support, and compassion. He was a proud and loving father to Naomi Kerkan, James Sobien II, Lori Sobien, Trina Stone, and the late Dwight Sobien. In addition to his children, James opened his heart and home to at least 15 adopted children that still call them Mom and Dad today, touching countless lives through his kindness and unwavering commitment to family.

He was a cherished grandfather to Anthony, Elizabeth, Dessa, Kevin, Kara, Courtney, Fred Jr., Danielle, Kyle, Cammron, Dakota, Jamie, James III. Additionally, he both became grandfather and father of and lovingly raised his son Dwight's children, Dwight Jr., Michelle, Tiffany, Megan . He was also blessed with 16 great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him immense joy and pride. Also like sons Gregory, Kerry ,Larry Haffly {Brother-in-laws] and brother David Sobien.

James was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Helen Sobien; his sons, Dwight D. Sobien, and Thomas TJ Layhue, his grand-daughter Amanda Taormina; and his brother, Andrew Sobien. Was the law-in law of the late Robert and Naomi Haffly.

James dedicated his career in the National Brotherhood of Electrical

as a member of the IBEW, Local Union No. 5, where he worked until his retirement. He was respected for his commitment to his profession. Beyond his career, James faithfully served as a pastor for many years, sharing God's word, offering guidance, and encouragement to those in his congregation and community. He serve as Election Judge in MT. Washington.

Those who knew James will remember him for his generous spirit, unwavering faith, devotion to family, and willingness to help anyone in need. He believed that family was not defined solely by blood but by love, and he lived that belief every day. Whether through his ministry, his work, or his home, James dedicated his life to serving others and leaving the world better than he found it.

Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will live on through the family he cherished and the countless lives he touched. The family takes comfort in knowing that James's love, wisdom, faith, and strength will continue to inspire all who knew him. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, John 3:16, Psalm 23:4

Viewing will be at Stephen M. Funeral Home on Saturday 06/27/26 from 3pm-7pm. In lieu of flowers, please submit Donations to the Jim Sobien Memorial Fund at Northwest Bank. Donations can be made in person or by mail.
